Ottawa, ON — The total value of building permits issued in Canada increased by 4.5 per cent ($504.8 million) to $11.7 billion, reports Statistics Canada. Gains were seen in both the residential and non-residential sectors in September.
The residential sector saw a 4.8 per cent increase in construction intentions ($335.3 million) for September. Specifically, the multi-family component rose by $252.2 million, and the single-family component rose by $83.1 million.
In the multi-family sector, Alberta (up $219.9 million) and Quebec (up $146.7 million) led the increase. In the single-family component, Ontario led the gains, up $114.0 million, despite decreases in five provinces and two territories halting the growth.
The total value of non-residential building permits grew 4.0 per cent ($169.6 million) to $4.4 billion in September. Gains were seen in the commercial (up $205.4 million) and industrial (up $104.8 million) components, while the institutional component declined (down $140.6 million).
The gains seen in the commercial component in September were primarily attributable to Alberta (up $109.9 million), while the increase in the industrial component was led by Quebec (up $67.1 million).
Meanwhile, the decline in the institutional component in September was driven by Alberta (down $75.6 million), Quebec (down $75.5 million), Manitoba (down $41.9 million) and Ontario (down $39.0 million).
