Chatham, ON — A hot summer’s day, countless hours outside, being pushed to the physical and mental limit. That’s the usual association with boot camps. But the Support Ontario Youth program is putting a different spin on this idea with the introduction of the Tools in the Trade boot camp. The first boot camps will be held from Sept 13 to 14 in Chatham, Ont.
“It’s like three events in one. First, we do a networking event with employers and workers in the trades. Second, we do training on actual tools that you’ll use in the trades as an apprentice. And then we do employability skills, so mock interviews, resume writing, and interpersonal skills, so how to relate to people on a job site,” said Stephen Sell, executive director of Support Ontario Youth.
Support Ontario Youth is a program funded by the Government of Ontario that focuses on supporting apprentices, employers, and all stakeholders in the skilled trades industry by streamlining and simplifying the apprenticeship journey.
Sectors offered through the boot camp include construction, electrical and plumbing, industrial, transportation and motive power, and service and horticulture.
The boot camp is open to all Grade 12 students, specialist high kills majors (SHSM), Ontario youth apprenticeship program (OYAP), and co-op high school students. In addition to helping students enter the workplace, the boot camp is also focused on offering retraining for people in the industry. The boot camp also offers all participants a free apprentice starter tool kit, valued at $250.
“The particular Chatham events are geared for adults, so anybody’s who’s just finished high school and above. In Ontario, the average age of an apprentice is 30, so the boot camps are geared for anybody who’s looking to get into either of those trades,” said Sell.
