Ottawa, ON — Canada has announced new counter-tariffs affecting various HVAC equipment imported from the United States.
Effective Sept. 8, there will be a 15 per cent tariff on specified split-system air conditioners, reversible heat pumps, domestic heat pumps, and certain air conditioning parts.
There will also be a 25 per cent tariff on specified United States-origin compressors, fans, non-electric air heaters, hot-air distributors, and related parts for building heating.
Tariffs will also be placed on commercial refrigeration and freezer equipment. Canada announced that several refrigerator and freezer categories will face 25 per cent tariffs. Specified refrigerated cabinets, display counters, and showcases will also face a 50 per cent tariff.
These counter-tariffs come as a direct response to the United States decision to impose a 50 per cent tariff on $27.6 billion of Canadian goods effective August 22. Canada’s counter-tariffs will match the U.S. Section 338 tariffs dollar for dollar.
Overall, “Canada’s counter-tariffs will apply to products covering $27.6 billion in imports from the U.S. and will focus on sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics that are most impacted by U.S. tariffs,” states the Government of Canada.
