Edmonton, AB — More apprenticeship opportunities will be coming to Alberta. The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) will be creating a new Advanced Skills Centre, which will have the room to train up to 4,200 more apprentices.
“This funding from Alberta’s government acknowledges the crucial role of skilled trades in the economy and NAIT’s role in delivering apprenticeship education that is essential for our province’s prosperity,” shares Laura Jo Gaunter, president and CEO of NAIT. “In collaboration with industry and the community, NAIT is set to modernize and expand our training capabilities. This is an investment in our vision, setting the stage for Alberta’s future.” The province has committed $43 million towards the project.
Construction is set to start in 2025 and will add 640,000 sq. ft. of new learning space at NAIT’s main campus in Edmonton, Alberta.
NAIT enrolls between 30,000 and 40,000 students each year in programs across its campuses. Of those students studying in full-time programs, well over 30 per cent are enrolled in apprenticeship and skilled trades programs.
The new training centre will provide apprentices with apprenticeship and technology-based education focused on training in four key sectors: construction, transportation, manufacturing, and energy.
