Burnaby, B.C. — Students, staff, and faculty at the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s (BCIT) trades and technology programs will soon have access to new training facilities.
The newly planned $220 million Trades and Technology Complex (TTC) will host a collection of newly renovated buildings and an enhanced campus infrastructure, which will create increased access to adaptive learning environments for trade education.
“Investing in new trades training infrastructure at BCIT is a critical part of equipping students for the jobs of the future while supporting a clean, innovative economy The new Trades and Technology Complex will help ensure future students have access to the best tools, instruction and equipment needed to meet the demand for an estimated 85,000 new trades jobs expected over the next 10 years,” said Anne Kang, minister of advanced education and skills training.
The complex will have the capacity for 700 new full-time students annually.
The Concert Properties Trades and Technology Centre will be the new training complex’s heart. A four-storey, 7,670 sq. m. building with mass timber elements to consolidate several trade programs into one location with space for inter-trade collaboration.
The TTC will also house the Robert Bosa Carpentry Pavilion, a Marine and Mass Timber Workshop, a new campus service building, and an ecological restoration of Guichon Creek.
Funding for the new complex came from the province of British Columbia.
BCIT also raised $33 million in contributions from 45 industry organizations and individuals through its INSPIRE campaign.
