Vancouver, B.C. — Innovative projects, teams, and individuals that positively contributed to Canada’s green building sector have been honoured by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC).
The CAGBC announced the winners of its CAGBC awards at its Building Lasting Change conference. The national competition features awards in two categories, “Green Building Excellence” and “Green Building Leadership.”
“As we begin our third decade, the CaGBC Awards showcase how green building has driven innovation in the industry from coast to coast,” said Thomas Mueller, president and CEO of CaGBC.
The Green Building Excellence Category included the following winners:
- The Collège Sainte-Anne campus project, Dorval, Qué. This project included constructing two new pavilions certified with CaGBC’s “Zero Carbon Building” – design standard. Energy modelling was performed throughout the integrated design process to optimize the buildings’ overall performance through high-performance envelopes and passive heating features.
- Lauberivière homeless shelter, Québec City, Qué, for the “Inspiring Home” category. The shelter focused on GHG reductions from baseline, recovering heat from the kitchen’s refrigeration systems to pre-heat domestic hot water, a green roof and community garden, and an aluminum cladding system that reduced the building’s embodied carbon.
- Scotia Plaza’s 100 Yonge Street building in Toronto, Ont, for “Deep Carbon Retrofit.” This project saw the building owner upgrade its mechanical and HVAC systems, increasing its overall energy efficiency and limiting disruption to existing tenants.
- The Manitou a bi Bii daziigae, Red River College Polytechnic, Winnipeg, Man, in the “New Construction” sector. The 100,00 sq. ft. building represents Indigenous knowledge, teachings, and traditions. This building features a dynamic envelope of photovoltaic glass, generating energy and changing colour based on weather and viewing angle.
“Celebrating leadership in advancing our thinking and our practices enables the green building community to recognize the progress we have made together. The commitment and innovation represented by these award winners is what we need to move the industry forward at scale,” said Mueller.
In the Green Building Leadership category, the following individuals and organizations were acknowledged with awards:
- Kathy Wardle, principal and director of sustainability at Perkins and Will, as its Green Building Champion.
- Nerva Energy Group Inc. as its Green Building Visionary.
- Hillary Geer, an energy specialist with EQ Building Performance, as its Emerging Green Leader.
- André Cazelais, head of the ecological transition and innovation department, building planning and management service with the City of Montréal as its Government Leadership.
In addition to the CaGBC Awards, CaGBC also presented its 2023 Lifetime Achievement honour to Michael Brooks, CEO of RealPac. The award highlights an individual for an extraordinary career in green building. Brooks was recognized for his over 25-year career advancing green building in Canada and around the world.
