Toronto, ON — The CSA Group has released its updated code series to help ensure the safe handling and storage of natural gas and propane. The B149 code series is a comprehensive code suite that guides the safe design, installation, operation, and maintenance of natural gas, biogas, and propane systems in Canada.

Nearly two-thirds of Canadians and many businesses in Canada still rely on natural gas for space and water heating. As a result, the latest edition of B149 reflects advancements in technology, industry practices, and safety requirements to address evolving needs in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
The code series features an updated edition of CSA B149.1, Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code. This code provides detailed requirements for installing and operating natural gas and propane equipment, including appliances, piping systems, and venting components. Key updates in the latest B149 code series include:
- Updating bonding requirements to align with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I
- Updating permissions for the use of press-connect fittings
- Special considerations for natural gas and propane installations in industrial applications
- Preparing for and addressing hydrogen-natural gas blends when the appropriate product standards are complete
- Adding specific requirements for rating plates and odorization of hydrogen-natural gas blends
Additional updated codes in the B149 code series include the propane storage and handling code, the code for the field approval of fuel-burning appliances and equipment, the installation code for propane fuel systems and containers on motor vehicles, and the code for biogas generation and utilization.
The CSA Group states that the B149 code series is updated every five years and is essential for supporting public safety and advancing industry practices in Canada.
