Washington, District of Columbia — Four Canadian teams are competing in the final stage of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Decathlon 2024 Design Challenge.
In total, there will be 40 finalist teams from 37 collegiate institutions.
The University of British Columbia Okanagan (Kelowna, B.C.) and Thompson Rivers University (Kamloops, B.C.) are finalists in the single-family housing division.
Toronto Metropolitan University, Toronto, Ont, UBC Vancouver, Vancouver, B.C, and the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ont, are all finalists in the attached housing division.
Created in 2002, the challenge encourages collegiate student teams to create building designs that address issues related to climate resilience, embodied carbon, existing building retrofits, community impact, and more.
The competition has four categories: single-family housing, attached housing, multi-family buildings, and education buildings.
Finalists were chosen during a virtual semi-final competition event from Feb. 23-24, 2024. This event saw teams present their zero-energy building designs to panels of industry experts.
The final awards ceremony will be held virtually on April 21.
