Ottawa, ON — The total investment in building construction across Canada rose 1.9 per cent to $21.8 billion in December, reports Statistics Canada.
Both residential and non-residential sectors recorded increases.
Specifically, investment in residential building construction rose 2.2 per cent to $15.1 billion. Single-family home investments saw a 0.8 per cent increase, while multi-unit construction investments rose by 3.5 per cent.
Investment in non-residential construction saw a 1.3 per cent increase to $6.7 billion in December. Monthly increases were recorded in eight provinces and one territory, with Ontario recording the most gains.
Specifically, commercial construction investment rose 2.0 per cent, the industrial component rose 1.8 per cent, and the industrial component edged up 0.6 per cent.
Overall, investment in building construction grew 1.0 per cent to $64.5 billion in the fourth quarter, marking the sixth consecutive quarterly increase.
The fourth-quarter increase in investment in building construction was led by the non-residential sector, which accounted for 88.9 per cent of the total growth in the quarter.
