Riverview, NB — The town of Riverview, N.B., has finished the construction of its new naturalized stormwater pond. Located in the Mill Creek area, the $800,000 project will help reduce flood risks, support higher-density housing, and improve long-term environmental outcomes.
The new infrastructure is estimated to help supply nearly 1,000 new housing units in the area. Additionally, the project supports affordability and density targets by facilitating the advancement of multi-unit housing developments and rezoning applications.
Through this project, Riverview’s new stormwater pond will capture and manage stormwater from a 39.43-hectare catchment area, reducing pressure on local drainage systems. The stormwater pond features a naturalized design that incorporates wetland vegetation and low-maintenance features that filter stormwater, improving water quality, supporting biodiversity, and reducing erosion.
Funding for the project was provided by the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF). The town of Riverview adds that this project “aligns directly with CHIF objectives by building resilient infrastructure that enables higher-density housing in a growing community, and supporting sustainable development to benefit present and future residents.”
