Ont. introduces new legislation to promote Canadian free trade

Toronto, ON — Ontario has unveiled the next step in its fight against Donald Trump’s tariffs.

The provincial government states that the newly proposed legislation aims to unlock free trade and labour mobility within Canada via the new Protect Ontario through Free Trade within Canada Act.

If passed, this legislation sets out to create new opportunities for job creation and investment attraction, support economic integration across Canada, and cut costly and unnecessary red tape to help protect and grow Ontario and Canada’s economies, according to the province.

“For too long, we’ve let red tape and endless regulations hold back our economy, making us vulnerable to external threats, including from President Trump’s tariffs,” said Doug Ford, premier of Ontario.

Included in the proposed legislation are parameters that would allow workers from other provinces and territories to work in Ontario with reduced labour mobility barriers and administration burdens.

In addition, the legislation includes “mutual recognition” with provinces and territories, so that goods, services, and registered workers are recognized for sale, use, or work in Ontario.
