Toronto, ON — In response to recent tariffs announced between Canada and the United States, the Ontario government has announced an additional $100 million in skilled trades training programs.
The Skilled Development Fund (SDF) training stream funds organizations for projects that address challenges to hiring, training, or retaining workers, including apprentices. The program has received $1.5 billion in funding to date.
The additional $100 million investment is expected to fund more projects than originally planned to support major industries and sectors expected to grow or face pressures from potential U.S. tariffs.
It is reported that more than 500,000 workers are expected to be needed to fill job openings in skilled trades-related occupations in Ontario over the next decade.
