Toronto, ON — Contractors working on hydrogen systems in Ontario will have to register with the province. The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) announced that, effective Feb. 3, hydrogen contractors will be regularly audited and must meet specific requirements for certification, equipment installation, and incident reporting, as are other fuel contractors in the province.
Contractors can submit their hydrogen contractor registration via the TSSA client portal. A hydrogen contractor can find a step-by-step guideline on the TSSA training page.
In addition, the TSSA introduces licensing requirements for transporting compressed hydrogen in bulk containers. Trucks currently used as bulk containers to transport compressed hydrogen to user locations will transition from variance approvals, which expire, to a licence application and approval process. Applications can be submitted through the TSSA client portal.
Existing hydrogen facilities and equipment, including refuelling stations and maintenance and conversion centres, will now have to transition to ongoing inspections and licensing by the TSSA.
All new and modified hydrogen facilities require TSSA’s engineering approval and inspections before issued a licence. Licenses will be required to be renewed annually.
