Davidson, North Carolina — Trane announces it is transitioning more of its commercial HVAC systems to refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP).
This transition comes in anticipation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) phase-down requirements for commercial chillers.
As of Jan. 1, 2025, all commercial chillers for comfort cooling and heating, packaged and split system HVAC units must ship with low GWP refrigerants.
“At Trane, we believe performance and sustainability can coexist. Transitioning to low-GWP refrigerants is one of the most effective decarbonization strategies for commercial buildings. Trane is quickly transitioning its product lines, so our customers have the solutions they need to help successfully comply,” said Oakley Roberts, vice president of product management at Trane.
According to safety standard UL60335-2-40, ducted HVAC systems with more than 3.91 pounds of R-454B refrigerant charge must include one or more refrigerant detection sensors.
As a result, Trane will add factory-installed leak detection systems to the following models with more than 3.91 pounds of refrigerant charge and refrigerant R-454B: the IntelliPak 3 Rooftop Units, the Axiom Horizontal and Vertical Water Source Heat Pumps, and the Axiom Vertical Stack Water Source Heat Pumps.
Trane adds that the following chillers and chiller heat pumps will feature next-generation refrigerants:
- Trane Air-Cooled models ACS, ACX, and CGAM are available with R-454B refrigerant.
- Trane Air-Cooled model ACR is available with R-513A refrigerant.
- Thermafit Modular-Unit chiller models AXM, WXM, MWC, MWS, and AMC are now available with R-454B refrigerant.
Additionally, Trane announces that all performance climate changer air handling units (models UCCA, CSAA, PSCA, TCFS, TCPA) are now available with A2L refrigerants.
