Ottawa, ON — The total value of building permits in April increased 20.5 percent to $12.8 billion, reports Statistics Canada.
The value of residential building permits increased by 21.0 per cent to $8 billion in April, largely driven by record-high levels in the multi-unit component, up 32.6 per cent to $5.4 billion. British Columbia (up 75.2 per cent) led the growth in the multi-unit sector.
In total, an all-time high of 22,600 new multi-unit dwellings were approved through building permits. British Columbia’s record of 7,200 new multi-unit dwellings authorized in April greatly contributed to this movement.
Single-family home building permits also increased by 2.4 percent. Across Canada, 4,300 new single-family homes were authorized.
In the non-residential sector, the value of non-residential permits increased 19.6 per cent to $4.8 billion in April, thanks to growth in British Columbia (up 149.9 per cent).
Increases were seen across the non-residential components, with the commercial (up 21.3 per cent), institutional (up 17.7 per cent) and industrial (up 17.4 per cent) components.
