Ottawa, ON — The total value of building permits rose by $1.4 billion across Canada in May, reports Statistics Canada. Increases were seen in both the residential and non-residential sectors.
Specifically, the residential building permits rose by $169.8 million in May, largely due to B.C.’s multi-family component, which saw an increase of $687.7 million. Nationally, the multi-family permits values grew by $194.8 million.
Additionally, the value of single-family permits saw a slight decline, down $25 million, thanks to losses in Ontario (down $77.5 million).
In total, 21,000 new multi-unit dwellings and 4,400 new single-family dwellings were authorized for construction in May across Canada.
In the non-residential sector, the value of non-residential building permits increased by $1.2 billion to $5.6 billion in May, thanks to gains seen in Ontario’s institutional component, up $1.3 billion.
Within the sector, commercial permit values rose by $87.8 million in May, while construction intentions in the industrial component fell by $117.2 million in May. Quebec recorded the most significant decline (down $50.8 million), followed by decreases in six other provinces.
