Ottawa, ON — The total value of investment in building construction increased by 0.4 per cent to $22.7 billion in July across Canada, reports Statistics Canada. Both the residential and non-residential sectors increased by 0.4 per cent.

In the residential sector, investments in building construction grew by $62.1 million to $16.0 billion in July. The increase was driven by the single-family component (up 2.5 per cent) and was halted by the multi-unit component (down 1.2 per cent).

Specifically, the single-family home increase was attributed to gains in Ontario (up $121.5 million) and Quebec (up $95.7 million).

The total value of investment in non-residential building construction rose by $25.3 million to $6.8 billion. Gains in the institutional component (up 1.9 per cent) were moderated by declines in the industrial (down 0.8 per cent) and the commercial (down 0.1 per cent) components.

The gains seen in the institutional component were driven by Alberta (up $40.1 million), while the industrial component saw losses in five provinces and three territories, led by British Columbia (down $6.1 million). Losses in the commercial component were led by British Columbia (down $14.0 million), followed by Nova Scotia (down $2.8 million) and Saskatchewan (down $2.6 million), but was offset by gains in Ontario (up $15.1 million).
