Vaughan, ON — The Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) supports imposing 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian exports to the U.S. in retaliation to Donald Trump’s threat of imposing his own 25 per cent tariffs on U.S. exports to Canada.
Unlike previous issuance of tariffs, these would be for all goods that are exported, whereas in previous Trump administrations, certain markets and goods were highlighted.
Trump has vowed to issue tariffs on Feb. 1.
“The proposal announced by President Donald Trump to impose a 25-per-cent tariff on Canadian exports to the U.S. and the dire state of housing supply in our province are both serious issues that threaten to undermine the economic health of Ontario, and they need strong leadership in place to address them,” said Richard Lyall, RESCON president.
Speaking at RESCON’s annual general meeting, Ford highlighted how the U.S. relies on Canadian energy, oil, minerals, and potash. Ford added that instead of tariffs, which would result in the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs, it would be better for the two countries to work together.
As stated by RESCON in their press release, Ford added that he would not hesitate to reciprocate with our own tariffs, stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the rest of team Canada, and use every tool in the toolbox if Trump proceeds with his threats.
